What we put on our skin is as important as what we put in our body.

Here at Paleo On The Go we care deeply about what our customers nourish their body on the inside. This is why we prepare all quality foods that are pasture raised and organic. Did you know that what you put on your body also has a profound affect on your health? The products we use on our skin are absorbed into our bloodstream, and do affect our health. Our focus today is feminine care products. We not only want to teach you about the potential harm involved when using these products regularly, but also wanted to suggest some alternatives that we feel work even better than traditional pads and tampons!

Toxins and Endocrine Disruptors can affect our fertility and increase the risk of cancer.

Do you know what is in your “feminine care product’? Most of us are not aware of all the dyes, chemicals, and preservative in products like feminine creams, washes, maxi pads and tampons. Regular use of these products can disrupt the endocrine system, contributing to hormonal imbalances and reproductive issues. Endocrine disruptors found in many of these products can increase the risk of breast cancer and other cancers as well. A website called Women’s Voices has created a downloadable and printable chart listing all the different chemicals found in each of these products, the function or reason the chemical is used, the potential health effects, and the specific products each chemical is found it. This information is quite alarming, seeing most women use these products on a regular basis, with their monthly cycles.

Most women are unaware of other options available to them for personal care.

vaginaMost of us are unaware of what other options may be available for us. We feel using pads and tampons are our only choice. However there are excellent alternatives available, that actually work as well or better than commercial marketed products.  The diva cup is an amazing and life changing alternative, that many women are not even aware of. The diva cup is an eco-friendly feminine care product that works amazingly well! The diva cup comes in different sizes for teens and women. It is a small silicone cup that is inserted into the vagina. When the cup fills, you remove it, dump it out, and reinsert. It works better than any pad or tampon, and you cannot even feel it. You can carry on with your usual activities, and not worry about the uncomfortable feel of some of these other products. The best part? It is made with silicone, and does not contain any of the following: latex, plastic, PVC, acrylic, acrylate, BPA, phthalate, elastomer and polyethylene and is free of colors and dyes. Silicone products have been shown to be biocompatible (i.e. accepted by the human body without adverse reaction). Another great feature about it? You can see exactly how much you are bleeding each cycle, and be more in tune with the flow of your body. This way you can be aware of changes in your monthly cycle.

Another alternative? The Luna Pad! Luna pads are a great alternative to chemical laden pads. They are more comfortable, and

vaginaeco friendly. You wash them with your laundry. By choosing to use washable and reusable menstrual pads and cups you are no longer exposing yourself to the potentially harmful chemicals and synthetic materials found in most disposable pads and tampons. Another bonus? They are better for our environment as well.

According to Lunapads.com:

“It’s estimated that approximately 20 billion pads, tampons and applicators are being sent to North American landfills annually. On an individual level, each of the approximately 73 million menstruating people in North America will throw away 125 to 150kg of disposable menstrual products (or 16,800 disposable pads or tampons) in their lifetime. These products require hundreds of years to biodegrade, particularly if wrapped in the plastic bag commonly provided for this purpose as part of their packaging. In fact, every piece of plastic ever made, still exists to this day. Thanks to Lunapads customers, 1 million+ disposable pads and tampons are diverted from landfills every month. We estimate that 1 Lunapad replaces 120 disposable products. Just imagine not having to buy menstrual products at all for at least 5 years!”

When it comes to personal feminine hygiene products, it’s good to know that we do have choices. You are already paleo, and nourishing your body from the inside with real food. Now it’s time to also focus on what you are using on the outside of your body too. Because most of us use these products on a monthly basis, it’s important that we learn about our options, and stick with non-toxic alternatives.
