In the strictest corners of the paleo world, alcohol is forbidden. And, it makes sense; paleo is all about cutting out toxins and processed foods. Alcohol is both! But, life can be full of gray areas, right?
Booze is new, but not that new.
Booze certainly isn’t a brand new addition to the human lifestyle. The earliest known alcohol consumption happened in Neolithic China around 9,000 years ago. While that is a long time ago, it’s still the “neolithic” period which means they were already living the agrarian lifestyle, not hunter-gatherer.
OK, let’s talk Summer and Tequila!
If you’ve decided that some the hard stuff is in your future this summer, there’s a good chance you are going to drink Tequila. The right kind happens to be the least processed and most paleo-friendly drink there is. A good tequila should only contain one ingredients: 100% agave. Tequila is traditionally, simply the fermented and distilled juice of the agave plant. Unfortunately, many tequila’s contain up to 49% of grain alcohol, which is a no-go for a grain-free diet.
Choose Tequilas that say “100% Agave”
Once you’ve found a Tequila that’s made with only agave, you probably don’t want to make a traditional Margarita. They are full of so much sugar. But, fret not! There’s an awesome adjusted paleo version called the “Norcal Margarita” compliments of Robb Wolf. Have a safe and fun summer!
